Harnessing the Ocean for a Better Tomorrow
The Future of Renewable Energy
The ocean covers over 70% of the planet and is full of energy. So much so that if we could harness this renewable energy source, we would meet much of the global electricity demand and move closer to net zero.
At Spiralis Energy, we are delivering solutions to make it happen. Every day, all over the world, tides create constant motion in the ocean. Water flows back and forth from one area to another. Our innovative technology will capture these tidal currents to generate clean, sustainable energy.
The sun is not always shining, and the wind is not always blowing, but tides are reliable and predictable years in advance. They are just waiting to be tapped, and we have the solution to harness that power.
Eco-friendly Design
The Axial Skelter is designed with the environment in mind. Made from fully recyclable plastics, its modular parts can be reused multiple times, promoting a circular economy.
Low Cost
3D printing by robots lowers costs, speeds up production, and shortens time-to-market. A complete system, including all generation equipment and structure, is expected to cost as little as £1M per unit.
Simple Care
The Axial Skelter sits just below the water surface, and its simple design ensures all components are easily reachable for routine checks and maintenance.
Quick Repair
Designed for the unpredictable ocean environment. In case of damage, there is no need to replace the entire system - only the specific modular segment. Repairs can be done without specialist offshore support vessels or heavy-lifting machines.
Local & Global
The Axial Skelter is 3D printed and can be transported in a shipping container as a kit.
Gentle on Marine Life
No sharp edges, no fast-moving parts, and no disturbance of the bottom habitat. The Axial Skelter has a minimal impact on the marine environment.
Inspired by Nature’s Resilience
Inspired by the marine life that has thrived in the ocean far longer than we have, the Axial Skelter is shaped like a Turritella seashell - just much larger, but as resilient and durable. It is designed to adapt to the tough, sometimes brutal ocean environment.
Simplifying Tidal Energy
The Axial Skelter brings something that the tidal energy industry has needed for a long time: simplicity. Our technology has only one moving part and is made from fully recyclable, 3D printed segments. Part by part, the entire tidal energy generator can be produced in less than a week and assembled almost anywhere. Best of all, these segments can be easily taken apart or swapped out, making maintenance and transportation simple.
Harnessing Tidal Power
Rotating in the water, the Axial Skelter will harness tidal flows to generate a steady, reliable stream of energy day in, day out. With each tide, we will move towards a greener future.
The Axial Skelter
At Cape Horn Engineering we pride ourselves on our regular benchmarking that adds confidence to our CFD simulation. This comparison to the Sprialis Energy skelter test rig was our second in the field of tidal energy, and like the first, we have matched the experimental data to within a very tight tolerance.
Our CFD programme matched the peak power production that the skelter produced on the test day in Poole Harbour. “At the rotation rate of 21 RPM the test rig produces 2.50kW, and we predicted 2.59kW. If we take into account the test rig friction the values are within 1.5% of each other, a very close match indeed. With this validation step completed we can have even more confidence in our prediction that the full size unit will break the 250kW threshold”

Bringing the Axial Skelter to the Ocean
For a Sustainable Future
The planet is depending on us to innovate and collaborate towards a green future. The rise of renewable energy systems brings hope, but only by combining them now and quickly can we reach net zero by 2050. Tidal Power is an essential part of this.
Scaling Up Tidal Energy
The Axial Skelter has already proven it can harness tides for electricity. We are raising funds to build a larger 500kW system and test it further. By 2025, we plan to deploy an initial array in the UK, aiming to secure a 15-year National Grid contract, and start generating clean energy by 2028. Our bold goal for the future is to achieve 50 GW of ocean energy capacity by 2040.
Join Our Green Energy Mission
We have a solution to produce green energy, but we cannot achieve these goals alone. Support our mission, listen to the ocean, and feel proud – you have contributed to helping our planet.
